Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) are used by many vehicle manufacturers on late model engines since 2006: Audi, BMW, GM, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Mazda, MINI Cooper, Nissan, Porsche, VW and others. GDI system sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber and not through the intake system as previous fuel injection systems have done.
Manufacturers use GDI systems to increase fuel economy and power by as much as 15 to 25 percent, but there is a downside to GDI systems and that is that carbon deposits build-up and accumulate on the back sides of the intake valves. Since the GDI systems spray fuel directly into the combustion chamber and not through the intake manifold, the detergents and additives added to fuel to limit carbon deposit build-up completely bypasses the intake valves and carbon deposits begin to accumulate on the intake valves. These deposits create turbulence and restrict airflow to the cylinders causing drivability concerns such as hesitation, stumbling, a Check Engine Light, misfiring, even hard starting or no start conditions. As time goes by, the more carbon deposits buildup on the valves, the worse the drivability problems become.
Some Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine can have performance loss, efficiency drops and increased emissions in as early as 3,000 miles/5,000 km.
Methods to Elimate Carbon build up
Silverdale Autoworks recommends and performs 2 methods to eliminate Carbon build up to restore the drivability back to like new condition.
- A professional GDI specific fuel injection/ air induction cleaning system such as the BG GDI Fuel/Air Induction Service. This is a fairly non-intrusive process that cleans fuel injectors, throttle body, plenum and air intake, intake valves and ports, removes combustion chamber deposits & corrects the balance of fuel and air in the system If used regularly (every 6-10,000 miles) it will keep your engine running properly for years to come. This service can be performed within a day.
- In heavy build-up conditions the only way to decarbonize the intake valves is walnut shell media blasting. This is an intrusive process that requires the intake manifold to be removed to allow media blasting to be performed. This completely removes all carbon build-up from the intake valves. After media blasting and reassembly of the intake manifold, you would then perform the BG GDI Fuel/Air Induction Service to finish the overall cleaning of the GDI system. This service can be performed in a day and other makes it may require 2 days to complete. We also take before and after pictures for you to see the difference.
